as much as i don't like this whole thing AT ALL...
In an interview with Abkhaz reporters broadcast in Russia, Mr Putin chastised the West for condemning Russia's invasion of Georgia. ''That's not even double standards, not even triple standards. It's a complete lack of any standards,'' he said, accusing the US of pressuring countries to continue to back Georgia's claim to the territories.

...he's right :/ it's vastly hypocritical.

The West fucked themselves over by recognising Kosovo too. Not that there was really any other option, (something a decent majority of my fellow Serbs don't seem to get) but it just opened the doors to stuff like this.

Eh. I see a compelling argument for recognizing Kosovo, though I'll be the first to admit I don't know anywhere enough of the history to make a value judgment. But we dove into the Russia/Georgia conflict (1) with complete misinformation and (2) roundly condemned Russia who (3) didn't start it and we (4) never backtracked or looked at the evidence. It was a wankathon.

Wank wank wankity wank.

There definitely was a compelling argument, but it was still against international law. Why do you think Spain stayed out of it? They knew recognising it would lead to more problems with ETA.

It opened doors to Russia interfering and can be used in arguments, which it will be if these regions want to be their own states.

I know (anecdotaly at least) what it can be like for those of Russian extraction who were born/live in former USSR countries...it's not fun :/
