Many Democrats would have preferred a larger bill, but agreed to pare back, including cuts to favored education and health programs, to win three crucial Republican votes in the Senate.
And this is why I feel those three Senators do not deserve any special praise for crossing party lines. They are essentially holding the country hostage on this thing.
God help Specter in 2010 if things get worse after this. I will personally knock on every door in my part of PA to get his opponent elected if they do.
Why does Reid have the balls to stand up to Pelosi but not anyone else? I hope her cat rickrolls him ;)
He's bowing at the altar of the 3 and it just looks weird. They should be helping their constituents. I get that he's thanking them for taking the heat, but srsly. The R-party as a whole is obstructionist, and these 3 have chosen to be good public servants aside from their idiot colleagues. They're not babies or dogs, you don't have to "yes, you're a good boy" them this much for doing the right thing, it sends the wrong message to everyone.
"They took it out of health, school construction and they put it more into tax issues.”
Mr. Harkin said he was particularly frustrated by the money being spent on fixing the alternative minimum tax. “It’s about 9 percent of the whole bill,” he said, “Why is it in there? It has nothing to do with stimulus. It has nothing to do with recovery.”
I agree. Those concessions are the worst. If Republicans are adamant about taking money away from health insurance and school construction and put it toward taxes. FINE. Increase the "payroll tax credit" from $500 for incomes below $70,000 to $1,000 for incomes between $14,000 and $40,000 and phase it down for incomes below and above that.
