Ia with Rahm, but it's one of those things where he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. People would've criticized him whether he tried to get Republican support or he didn't.
Obama is playing the Republicans against themselves. He's making it clear that he's dedicated to the American people, is listening to them and wants to help. Right now, the American people trust him way more than either party in Congress, especially Republicans.
He's making it clear that his plan is about helping everyone and that everyone would benefit, not just one particular group.
Additionaly, he's pushing the bipartisanship ideal where parties listen to one another and try to work together, yes even though the Republicans obviously want to part of it.
You know what that is? Brilliant.
He's making it harder and harder for Republicans to look like they're opposing this legislation because they care about the people, and not because they really want the country to go to Hell so that they can benefit from it.
I agree! If there's one thing Obama is, it's smart. By making concessions to the Republicans, he's showing that he's willing to work together. But the Republicans getting the concessions and still not being satisfied? That shows that getting what they wanted wasn't their primary objective. He's calling their bluff, and they're shooting themselves in the foot. It's brilliant.
I'm still not 100% convinced, but with each passing day I learn that he's a better chess player than I thought. Pandering Panda™ still has his ears pricked up, but he's about to have a beer and won't care soon.
It'd be pretty lame if Rahm did this, you talk to people in person not by cheap shots in the media. It'd be pretty lame too on the loyalty to your boss/friend meter as well. IMHO if Rahm had an issue that didn't get through I bet he'd rather round up some high level Dems to level in.
Not if it's part of the strategy. Having an unnamed official leak something like "we keep wanting him to really go partisan!" makes Obama look even more above-it-all.
is that he [Obama] put too much emphasis on nonpartisan nirvana rather than on getting the job done.
Thing is, you really can't get any job done in the Senate right now if you don't at least try to ween off moderate Republicans (which is as close to bipartisanship that the Senate can get, sadly).
