Study: Stem Cells Reverse Paralysis in Rats

Transplanted adult stem cells have been found to reverse paralysis associated with spinal cord injuries in lab rats, a new study finds.

The study, headed up by Miodrag Stojkovic, deputy director and head of the Cellular Reprogramming Laboratory at Centro de Investigacion Principe ( Read more... )

Oh, to the OP: the article seems to be about ADULT stem cells, which bush did not ban. Adult stem cells are taken from adults, not embryos. They are also superior in that there is no rejection issues because they are already perfectly matched with the patient's body, whereas unless the embryonic stem cells come from a clone there will be a chance of rejection.

I know, that's why I bolded that part in the article. Some people don't understand that stem cell research isn't MERELY limited to those of the embryonic variety.

I'm actually that these are adult cells, because it would probably be easier to get funding for this with less controversy...at least I hope. There's no accounting for stupidity.

Ah, apologies, I was confused by your comment at the end!
Yes, I think adult stem cells have a lot more potential than embryonic... unless we get into cloning territory. People could keep a few anencephalic clones around in case they need new parts :

They booted him from office? I thought they had to go through the impeachment process first then vote for removal?

That is cool, and actually reversing paralysis?

Yeah, apparently in the rat tested successfully, he started getting much of his mobility back within several days. :D

That'd be pretty cool if it was the same effect in humans, I guess it makes sense though when I read more of the article there.

One can hope! lol

All I know is I had a Christian college professor teaching organic chemistry that sided with stem cell research. If some of these people educated themselves on the science, they would see it doesn't harm anybody.

I don't know anyone personally who this would mean anything to, but reading this article I started tearing up for all the people out there who just got a little ray of hope.
I'm such a fucking ~girl.~

I'm a ~girl~ too in that case. You wonder about all the money and stuff people put in to cures and where it goes and why nothing happens, and then when you read something like this that makes you think that it's possible that people who've been paralyzed may not need wheelchairs indefinitely, that someday soon it could be possible to heal them in a couple of weeks and send them on their way, it just...

I'm tearing up again. ;__;

Crying and smiling hurts a little. Like, this face: :'D was not meant to be made, but I just can't help it. It's been needed a lot lately.
