Our prisons are pathetic. I watch way too many shows about prison life and it's sad that we're locking people up and expecting that to fix everything. What about when they get out? They're not any better than when they went in most of the time so of course a cycle of crime is created.
I saw a show recently that talked about the increased use of solitary in prisons. Inmates are locked up in a room by themselves for days at a time and they can go insane. One guy killed someone on a bus just a few hours after getting out of prison after he had been in solitary almost his whole sentence. We spend way too much money and effort on locking people up instead of preventing crime.
I don't even know why I care so much about prisons though since I don't know anyone who has been to prison. My dad works at one but he only got the job a year ago and I've been passionate about the issue since jr high.
I agree, especially with this: What about when they get out? They're not any better than when they went in most of the time so of course a cycle of crime is created.
This is probably the first video I ever bothered to favorite on YouTube. 55 seconds in, I still get chills.
I was pretty despondent the whole night, because Macaca was leading up until something ridiculous like 85% of precincts had reported, not realizing that it didn't include chunks of Richmond and most of Northern VA. (That's precisely why, this year, I wasn't too worried when Obama trailed McCain in the early returns.)
