As much as I hate the guy (which is very very much), some of the anecdotes are taken out of context but I'd tend to agree with the general idea of the piece : since he's been elected, Sarkozy has been turning the french political system around from a parliamentary regime to a, de facto, presidential one (american style but without the proper check and balances ( ... )

Well she certainly wants to and tried to seize control of the main left wing party to be sure she wouldn't be challenged come 2012 but most of the other big names on the left teamed up to beat her and succeed.
It's complicated because half of the party wants to follow Segolene and her idea of joining with Francois Bayrou (center leaning right) and the other half (about 50.02% against 49.98% actually) want to steer clear of that and remain a clear left wing party. She's quite a divisive figure even in her own party.

As for who can beat Sarkozy... ? Right now there aren't that much people. Most people on the left just hope/fear the record of his presidency will be so bad, voters will want to vote to get rid of him rather than actually vote for the idea of his opponent.

The only reason I liked Sarkozy was because he appointed Bernard Kouchner.
