FiveThirtyEight: Nate Silver sets us worrywarts straight

Nov 02, 2008 17:15

Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight has been getting a bit testy lately, which I suspect is reflective of the types of e-mails he's been receiving recently.

Yesterday, he took the time to ease Obama supporters' fears surrounding Pennsylvania:

On Pennsylvania: )

I would like to know what the hell is going on with Missouri? Can someone make me feel any better about this?

He posts the polls for each state along the side, you can scroll down and see how your state is polling.

He said he's basically doing some manual tightening because there weren't as many polls out, and what little polling happened over the holidays weren't necessarily reliable.

And seeing as there may be one good day of polling left (before the big one), there isn't much time for any major shifts towards McCain.

I still think Missouri can go blue, but we'll have to wait and see.

I've been watching Missouri on 538 like a hawk since I discovered the website two months ago. We were blue for the longest time and all of a sudden we turned awfully red awfully quickly. It's been hurting my head how that could possibly happen.

Like I said, I think that was him tightening the statistics; there haven't been any new polls in the past couple of days.

Don't lose faith. :)

for once I am glad that I am, at the moment, unemployed and not in school. this leaves me free to park my ass in front of the tv all day tuesday and do nothing but freak the fuck out.

Medical leave.

I may need a stronger prescription between now and Wednesday morning.

I'm not unemployed, but I am off on Tuesday, so count me in the "hear hear" column.

I won't lie. I saw McCain's speech in PA today at his "Road to Victory" rally and it freaked me out to see how confident he was.

Confidence means nothing, it's votes that count, and thus far, the trend has been towards Obama. I don't think that's going to change.
