"If it wasn't for Obama I would vote Democrat. Blacks just cause trouble, that's the taste I've got in my mouth."

But there is ( Read more... )

"White voters aren't saying what they really think, whether that's here in Fayette County or nationally. I had one caller who said he thinks Obama is Osama with plastic surgery."

Nate Silver of 538 has pretty much written about this issue over 9000 times. He says that the effect will be less pronounced during this election. While Obama will lose some votes thanks to race, the rise of the religious right has made it easier for people to rationalize voting against a black candidate by saying they're not morally strong, or support abortion/gay rights/whatever.

There's also some anecdotal evidence that people who harbor racist views may be voting for Obama just because they're sick of their economic situaition and see it as the lesser of two evils. Politico has been collecting some of these examples.

Me too. I think having a Prez of colour, as well as a GenX Prez will be GOOD for America. I think it's time that younger, fresher ideas, the ones that reflect the US of the 21st century, take over.

Look at my icon and have a little faith, bb. I'm voting straight dem and saying screw you to Lou Barletta as well. (if you don't know Lou, google him and be disgusted)

Yay! I too am voting straight Dem in the PA-11. Though I would love to see Lou on Colbert's Better Know a District, his policies make me ill.

My boyfriend lives in Hazleton and it's pretty much Lou signs out the bung hole. Also, Lou also sauntered in the bar my sister tends at with 50 of his cronies. I'm sure you can imagine what the hot topic was being discussed. ::eye roll::

The rural areas of PA always find some way to justify being much more conservative than their voter registration cards would suggest. It's a very socially conservative area and if it wasn't that the Dem candidate was black, it would be something else--he's pro-choice, he's from New England, he's a she. It's always something.
