People with a prison record aren't typically allowed in Canada or the US as far as I understand so this isn't really surprising.

Perhaps it's not surprising, but it should definitely be criticized, and perhaps rethought, given the laws (and history) being referred to here.(1-4 ( ... )

Another historical detail regarding the Espionage Act: it was also used to convict Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed in 1953.
