The contest for control of the Democratic Party between left and center is continuing apace. The latest battleground is over a handful of minority Democrats being groomed by the centrist establishment to run for office: Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

I can accept that Kamala, Cory, and Deval aren't progressive enough in some cases, and I can understand needing to question them, but I find it very difficult to trust people who suggest that Bernie Sanders is the standard they need to live up to.

"The left" has been around far before the Sanders campaign. Wanting money out of politics, anti Wall Street sentiment, single payer, etc was not invented by Bernie Sanders.

He was just the first politician in a long time to run for president in the democratic party and be unapologetically liberal.

There's what you won't compromise on, and then there's this ideological purity that's creeping in. We see Trump getting in without so much as pretending to compromise and we (understandably) are livid about it. Why are we being told to accept slower progress when the 'ram what we want through' crowd won?

Trump sold hate. Hatred is the easiest thing in the world to be ideologically pure on. He didn't dress it up, he didn't cover it, he didn't even bother with dog whistles. His message boiled down to, 'I hate the people you hate, and I will do my best to utterly destroy them.'

That is a clear, concise, pure platform. Every plank in it was another promise to ruin anyone that wasn't a Trump voter. This is the only way you get that kind of ideological purity.

Though, speaking of compromise, one of a handful of things I am not going to compromise on is abortion rights. Which the leftist movement seems to be very willing to put on the bargaining table ( ... )
