If two more states were to ratify the ERA at this point, Congress would need to extend or waive the 1982 deadline it originally set.

That's a not-insubstantial hurdle buried in there...

I'll never forget how disappointed I was when IL didn't ratify the ERA back in 1980-whenever. If we had another shot I think it would pass now. This state is pretty sane on so many other issues. We have the least fucked up abortion laws in the midwest, and we actually legalized same-sex marriage legislatively instead of having to be sued into doing the right thing. IL is too cool to not ratify the ERA, damn it.
