Great post. I think you also have to take into consideration that around the time he was getting ready to run for election, he probably tried to make decisions that would appeal to more liberal voters and would get him notoriety. On a sidenote, the word 'maverick' is now hilarious to me.

Like 90% of his image as a "maverick" among most normal people is that he went on Jon Stewart's show during the bush years and didn't sound like a complete toadie. He has been grandstanding since Trump was elected but it's probably more out of malice that Trump attacked him personally, not related to anything he plans to do legislatively.

It also kind of cracks me up that he talks now about the importance of democratic institutions, like he wasn't part of the coalition stonewalling Obama's SCOTUS nomination because apparently democratic presidents can't nominate justices now.

He's no "maverick". He sold his soul and principles to the GOP to get their support for his run in 2008. He used to stand up to them, but not since then.

And he get's lots of camera time for calling out Marmalade Mussolini but continues to rubber stamp all the cabinet nominees, in lockstep with the rest of the Republicans.

What little respect I used to have for him is long gone.
