You don't get to play innocent and maverick now.

Well, well, well, that's all very nice and statesman like of McCain to say but I'll believe the Republican handwringers are earnest in their concern when they stop giving the Cheeto of the Apocalypse everything he wants.

If the Democrats and Independents are united, it takes three (3) Republican Senators all willing to rebel on the same issue.

The Republican Senators who are relatively sane and/or have their own reasons to oppose Trump: Olympia Snowe, John McCain, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Rob Portman, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz. That's eight, off the top of my head. But so far I think they've been taking turns: you get credit for voting against this nominee, I'll get credit for voting against that bill, etc. but we never all oppose the same Trumpism so it's all in good fun and nobody gets hurt.

For Republican legislators considering opposing Trump, as for somebody with a pistol facing a bear or a domestic-violence victim facing his/her abuser, you have to "shoot to kill". If you just wing him and make him angry, you'll personally be worse off than if you had done nothing.
