So activist disappears, people protest, protestors are then accused of blasphemy for protesting, which in turn puts their lives at great risk. Horrifying.

Exactly. And there really is a context of figures seen as promoting 'liberal' or 'secular' values being targeted, including journalists and activists. (The figure linked to in the first article, showing the number of journalists killed, is really telling.)
