I don't understand why more places aren't more gung-ho to hire people who have service dogs (or other animals, tbqh). Except for that place that handles food, I have never walked into a place with a dog and been upset. Even though you can't pet them, I think they make people very happy. I was just in a store yesterday, and there was a kid crying, and my first thought was, "what I would give for that to be a dog instead of a human".
I completely agree. I walked into a UPS store a couple of weeks ago, and there was a sweet looking golden retriever asleep on the floor in front of the counter. Made my day, even though she/he was sort of in the way. ;p
Animals in general make people feel good, I think, but dogs have a special ability to relate to people and can ben trained to handle a variety of situations, which I think make them extra, extra special.
Last time I went home (admittedly, 2003), the comic book shop had a cat. The guy had gotten a shelter cat because he was lonely. His UPSTAIRS neighbor started bitching about litter box stink -- the guy said he scooped the litter first thing through the door each day -- and the cat "running around like an elephant all day". So he said "Fuck it, I'll bring her to the shop with me."
I work at a lab with separate office and lab space. My coworker brings her weimeraner dog Mollie in most days. She just hangs out in a collapsible kennel and looks cute.

A few years ago, there was a horrible shooting on the campus of my alma mater, Northern Illinois University. Some of the news stories talked about therapy dogs being brought to the campus and how much people were comforted by their presence. It was a horrible episode, but the dogs were the one bright spot in the whole thing.
