"The more you argue with a toddler, the more they become entrenched in their views" -Trevor Noah, The Daily Show

Same principle. You have to be deliberate and tactful when dealing with the ignorant, whether a tiny child who doesn't know better or a willfully ignorant adult with a persecution complex and groupthink.

I have noticed some from the left doing that as a form of moral superiority, instead of thinking from a tactical perspective.

I read a whole article today that basically summed it up as "it's more important to be righteous than to win"

I think this is something the left in general is struggling with. We can't enact change if we can't even get into office. :/

Oh do not get me even started on this. I was a couple years too young to vote in the 2000 election, but being homeschooled, it was an ongoing assignment to pay attention to the campaign and elections. So I watched that like a bloody hawk -- and had plenty of debates with my pro-Shrub father. (I didn't believe him the first time he told me Shrub won. The second time, I was still half asleep, and mumbled something to the effect of, "You've fucked us all." I'm pretty sure he didn't hear that, since I didn't get in trouble ( ... )

It's often exhausting for miniorities to navigate day-to-day life surrounded by bigots and their micro and macro aggressions. Existience in this society can be fatiguing. Is it fair or reasonable to ask us, then, to persuade our oppressors that we're human and deserve rights? To add another burden on oppressed people to fix something they didn't break? But this time fix it with a smile on your face! Fix it without being angry! Don't judge!

If fighting racism our way makes people more racist, then I expect privileged people to step up and fight it in their way. White people need to do this work, because they're the ones who keep suggesting that talking about racism is what's preventing it from going away. But I am tired of hearing all liberals/progressives bunched together in this regard as if this is a responsibility of the left as a whole.

MTE. People of color have been trying the tactic of nicely explaining to people why racism is wrong since we have existed and it doesn't really work. So now that we just flat out say "that's racist" it's shocking to people.

White people can take on the responsibility of nicely explaining. I'm going to keep pointing out racist things as racist because that's my duty. Decent people will listen and it will eventually stop being shocking.

ETA: And directness does work with some people, even if it doesn't work with everyone. I've told people "that's racist/sexist because _________, don't say it" and they've told me later they appreciated me being direct with them about why they were wrong and it helped them learn.

Without the correlative response of how oppressed groups respond to an increase in oppression (hint: the worse it gets, the less those groups care about enacting violence in return), this article isn't really giving the full story. Which is, if racists doesn't understand that "that's racist" is usually a better response than "if you're going to not care about me, then I'm not going to care about you," they're going to find their lives very disrupted and will be very upset.
