Justice Department says it will end use of private prisons

The Justice Department plans to end its use of private prisons after officials concluded the facilities are both less safe and less effective at providing correctional services than those run by the government.

good, and i hope that leads to less incarceration in the longrun because it will no longer be profitable. it's hard to be optimistic though.

Good, good, good, good, good. Issues with security, safety, and abuse aside, the idea of making money off another person's misery is revolting.

Good. The government should be running their own prisons and this is one step to getting there.

I wonder what it will take for states to close their private prisons. I didn't look it up, but I think there are near 13 private prisons per state, so this really is a drop in a bucket.

Yeah, I was very excited until I realized that this only affects federal prisons. It's most certainly a step in the right direction, but it's only a fraction of the problem if states are still supporting private prisons.
