Family: Son killed by neighbor who called him 'dirty Arab'

For years, the Jabara family says, their Tulsa neighbor terrorized them.

He called them names -- "dirty Arabs," "filthy Lebanese," they said.

He hurled racial epithets at those who came to work on their lawns, they alleged.

He ran Haifa Jabara over with his car and went to court for it.

Harassment by neighbors is really difficult to deal with in the courts. It's like a kind of domestic abuse, and taken about as seriously, which is to say, it isn't really taken seriously at all. Coupled with the widespread bigotry against people of Middle Eastern descent so rampant right now, it's not at all surprising that the justice system so grossly failed the Jabara family. My heart goes out to them.

Ugh. I have a friend who is Egyptian-Canadian and he's been treated badly for it before, and that's in Canada (not saying Canada is immune from assholes..every country has them, but I feel like we have more of a culture that contributes to it here in the U.S.). He's actually nervous about traveling to the U.S..partially because of that and also partially because he's transgender. It just sucks that he has to fear what he looks like and who he is because people are horrifying assholes and we have a presidential candidate who is feeding right into their hatred

This is horrific and was preventable. The justice system failed them.

:( I'm really heart broken over this.
