I am just thankful my friends who live in the area are safe. I was at work when this happened and live far from the site but was still frantic on break at 12am making sure my friends were safe.
As a Milwaukeean, I'm not surprised this happened. We are one of the most segregated cities and it sickens me.
My Facebook feed has been disgusting with the amounts of racism and vitriol against BLM, I've had to log out.
My feelings are the exact same. When I moved away from Milwaukee, it was a culture shock. It's so segregated and I had to educate myself out of the ignorant mentality of being raised in such a segregated city.
Naw, Milwaukee has always been shit when it comes to diversity. We have always been separated by race and socioeconomic status. While I don't justify the actions of rioting. Milwaukee has always treated the black community like shit and their frustration and anger is valid. The North side of Milwaukee is primarily popularized with black people and growing up, I don't remember an association with going to the north side that was positive.
It wasn't until I left that I was able to recognize how screwed up the city was in terms of race and equality.
