Bernie Sanders buys a $575,000 vacation home and the Internet cries hypocrisy

Aug 11, 2016 09:29

Bernie Sanders does not like fancy-schmancy things. He isn’t a huge fan of gazillionaires, tuxedos or any of the highfalutin trappings of society’s economic ills. This, of course, made him a hero among the country’s growing socialist movement. So when news came that the former presidential candidate bought a $575,000 vacation home for his family, ( Read more... )

Um, so what's the issue here? If he used his own money to pay for it who the fuck cares?

Personally, I don't really care either since he never ran on an anti-consumerism, but I can understand why his hard left supporters would be disappointed. For people who are traditional socialists/anti-capitalists, owning a holiday home is a privilege of the bourgeoisie. For them it is no doubt disappointing to realize that their socialist revolutionary is actually turning out to be just another center-left politician, albeit more left than most of the other center-left American politicians.

I know probably 100+ socialist identified folks who worked on the Sanders campaign in multiple states. Like, I'm talking with these folks on a regular basis as a part of the activism I do though email lists, conference calls, facebook groups etc. I don't see anyone giving a shit about this. I didn't even know this was a thing until this post. I think everyone was well aware that (while he has less wealth than most other senators and congresscriters) that he still earns more than the average person.

That's reassuring. You should write a counter-article for the WaPo :) I walk back my statement then to "I understand why some of his former supporters may feel disappointed". I was not a supporter of his because I think Hillary is a boss and will be a great pres, but my personal politics are more left-wing than both of them and was admittedly a bit surprised by this story. I loved his bit about never buying a tux because I assumed it was an anti-consumerist statement. I only own a week's worth of clothes for anti-consumerist/minimalist reasons, so it was nice to hear that sentiment broadcast all over international news while he was campaigning. But perhaps I misinterpreted it as an anti-consumerist thing when it was more about an anti-elitist thing.

Eh, I don't care. People who spend a lot of time in high stress jobs while in the public eye need private places they can go to unwind and recharge.

God, OP is transparent. This is such a mean-spirited post. At least other Hillary supporters try to build their own candidate up instead of tearing down the one who lost to her.

Thank you for acknowledging that most Hillary supporters don't spend our time going after Bernie, because it's true. :-)

I actually know a lot more HRC supporters who like Bernie than not, some quite a bit. If he had won the nom, I think most of us would have flocked to support him without much fuss.

Yeah, I had you in mind when I wrote that post. I have serious misgivings about Clinton but I want to believe we can have civil disagreements about her, no matter how strong our views. The least one can do is acknowledge good participation from the opposition.

the reality is, pretty much every election, people fight like cats and dogs during the primary, and then most folks within the party come around to the winner of the nomination in the end. People need to chill haha

his platform was never "people with money shouldn't spend it," in fact it was a pro-consumerism if you think about it (given he wants to raise the minimum wage).

anyway, w/e.
