Sure, [Soulless Villain] had a disastrous week on the campaign trail, but at least he may have made history: Longtime political veterans say they cannot recall a candidate who has similarly and needlessly damaged himself quite so badly

I think Trump made the fatal error of threatening the villagers, and forgot they had torches. You know it has to be killing, say, Chris Cillizza or the bros at Politico to be spending this campaign writing about anything other than what icky state Clinton's vaginal teeth are in, but Trump said he was coming for them once he got elected, and that shall not pass. Hell, Maureen Dowd took a week off from her Clinton derangement to write something (lame but) critical about the man, even if she did predictably follow it up with a column in which she repeated what he had to say unchallenged and a return to her obsession with Obama's lack of manliness.
Let's face it, they created the candidate and they kept him winning. All they had to do was stop.

I was listening to the NPR Politics podcast and one suggested reason for the change is instead of reporting "Trump said this..." and then leaving it to the reader/viewer to decide what to think, a lot of media outlets are now reporting "Trump said this and it is wrong" now that it's the general election season. So his messiness is standing out more for people who weren't paying attention during the primary season.
