as a disabled black woman, i am really heartbroken about this. especially after learning about the autistic somali-canadian named abdirahman abdi, who was beaten to death by police in ottawa, canada (yes, the country some people love to say is "perfect" and "doesn't have a police brutality problem". ableism is global. ableism is violence. i recommend reading this, lydia brown is my friend and a highly respected disability rights activist:
I live in Tokyo, and my Red family has loved pointing out to me that this shows that mass murders can even be committed by people with KNIVES, so banning guns is not going to solve any problems.
I casually remind them that while 19 souls lost is absolutely fucking tragic, this is the largest multiple killing in the past 70 years. Some guy with a gun killed more people than that at once in the past 70 days. But I guess if you can't prevent EVERY mass murder why take any steps whatsoever to prevent one at all?
This is something that must be very shocking in Japan because stuff like this doesn't happen very often. Murder rates are not all that high, especially mass murder. This guy was clearly a very disturbed person. And it's horrible that someone would especially target persons with disabilities.
