Vanilla nice: Why Hillary picked Kaine

Jul 22, 2016 22:31

The Virginia senator is a politician who's never lost a race. When Hillary Clinton announced Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as her running mate Friday evening, she made a characteristically cautious but responsible choice - indicating that in her pick she was more concerned with finding a long-term governing partner than an electrifying campaigner on the ( Read more... )

I'm disappointed at the concessions WRT reproductive issues he made as the governor, but I'm still pretty happy about the Clinton-Kaine ticket. I trust them to pick pro choice SCOTUS people.

I agree with you, but I do think his views have evolved and progressed beyond his Governor days. I can understand how as a Catholic he wasn't perfect at the start, but I really appreciate that he straight up said this (even if he after let some questionable things happen):

"I have a traditional Catholic personal position, but I am very strongly supportive that women should make these decisions and government shouldn't intrude. I'm a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade and women being able to make these decisions. In government, we have enough things to worry about. We don't need to make people's reproductive decisions for them."

Saying this and then letting "questionable" things happen would suggest that he was being dishonest, so I'm not sure what there is to appreciate about that in particular.

It does, however, seem like his views on abortion and reproductive rights have been evolving, so there's hope.

By "questionable" I mean supporting parental consent laws. I don't think that means he was being dishonest about supporting Roe v. Wade, and it's something AFAIK, he no longer supports considering his 100% rating with PP and NARAL.

Meh. This will do nothing to shore up excitement in her ticket.

Well at least she can hopefully get Virginia locked down with him on the ticket. I really just want her to win. Perhaps she is not taking any chances cause she understands how important a victory in November is.

I think Warren would be less effective as VP than her current position as a senator.

I'm honestly relieved that Warren is still my senator. I don't think Massachusetts can handle another "special election" after two in three years. And the last thing we need is another Scott Brown (who was one of the first to endorse Trump in the primary).

how do you counter "more liberal than thou" rhetoric? maynardsong July 23 2016, 19:20:26 UTC
Because one of my friends sent me this on fb, she was constantly caping for Bernie Sanders, and I myself voted for him in the primary, and I myself wasn't pleased that Kaine made the abortion concessions he did as my governor in 2005-2009. But this is still offputting ( ... )

I think it was someone here who once said "It's easy to advocate burning it to the ground when you won't be the one in the ashes."

exactly! i guess i can understand the sentiment in theory, the whole shocking-the-establishment-into-a-revolution thing, but actually living through even just one term of a trump presidency is another thing entirely. it might not end up being apocalyptic-proportions, but it would still be ugly as fuck and its not something i'm eager to experience firsthand.

It's not going to rile up the base either, it's just going to set up the stage for another centrist like Obama to rally the left with promises of "change" and by "change" they'll still mean "not the republicans"
