New Leak: Top DNC Official Wanted to Use Bernie Sanders’s Religious Beliefs Against Him

Jul 22, 2016 12:31

Among the nearly 20,000 internal emails from the Democratic National Committee, released Friday by Wikileaks and presumably provided by the hacker “Guccifer 2.0,” is a May 2016 message from DNC CFO Brad Marshall. In it, he suggested that the party should "get someone to ask" Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders about his religious ( Read more... )

Well, someone was clearly smart enough to decide against this, because I don't remember it happening. The emails about Palestine bother me more though. Ultimately, it doesn't surprise me that the DNC would want HRC to be the nominee over someone that they perceived as an outsider.

Yes, this sounds like idle chitchat that never actually amounted to anything, rather than evidence of a *gasp* DNC conspiracy against Bernie.

When the veep news hits, that will take center stage. Any time now... *drums fingers on desk and glares at phone*

The 'rigged' talk is so ridiculous. He lost the election by every conceivable metric, and I say that as someone who would have happily voted for Bernie had he won. I'm really just tired of the word emails.

And yeah I'm not sure why the VP announcement is taking so long.

Hell, I actually voted for Bernie in the primary, and I'm happily voting for Hillary in the general.

I've been refreshing all day hoping to get the VP announcement. What's taking so long?

As much as I roll my eyes at people claiming that the Democratic nomination was rigged etc., it's clear that the higher-ups at the DNC were against Bernie from the get-go and it's gross that they would attempt to use Bernie's religion (or lack of) against him when they're supposedly the party of tolerance.

Except that no attempt was actually made.

Unless there was some kind of scrutiny about Bernie's religious beliefs and I totally missed it. Since I was following Bernie closely and actually voted for him in the primaries, I doubt I'd miss something like that, but it is possible I missed it.

Yeah, it got talked about in one email exchange, but obviously someone killed the idea very quickly.

Yeah, it's gross that it was discussed, no question, but someone (maybe a lot of someones) much higher on the food chain didn't let it get beyond that.

Which is ultimately what is supposed to happen.

I mean I get that politics are dirty, but I just think it's a tad hypocritical for the DNC to consider using someone's religious affiliation against them and then harp on Bernie about "party unity" when said party never really liked him in the first place.

Yes, that would be hypocritical, which is maybe why it never got beyond what I called "idle chitchat" up thread. People brainstorm all kinds of shit. There's probably stuff that could be leaked from every campaign that would sound incredibly shady. This obviously was shady, so much so that it was never actually put into practice.

I'm really troubled by the comments excusing this as just idle chit chat. First of all it isn't just chit chat if there is a "paper" trail (well, electronic trail), and second it's disturbing that anyone would defend even a conversation about targeting a Jewish person over his religious beliefs (or lack thereof).

The fact that this was even discussed by anyone in the dems is disgusting, and if they have conversations like that they really shouldn't be painted as non-bigoted party.

Eta, thought I am surprised HRC didn't go for this, considering the bullshit she pulled in 2008.

No she damn well did not.

Are people around here forgetting that DWS is Jewish, too? Do you honestly think DWS would be even remotely okay with anti-semetic anything?

Gross. You have to wonder why people are dumb enough to put this shit in writing on their official email accounts no less.
