U.S. Representative Mark Takai Dies at 49

U.S. Congressman Mark Takai, who served as the representative for Hawaii's first district, has died, NBC News has confirmed.

Takai, 49, announced in May he would not seek re-election after recently learning that his pancreatic cancer has spread. Takai had planned to serve the rest of his term, which would have ended in January 2017.

He was so young. I don't know what his platform was in Hawaii, but he seemed like a really genuine guy.

Pancreatic cancer can diaf. I had a friend in his 60s who was diagnosed in early May three years ago and was dead by July. Watching him deteriorate like that was terrible; I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Pancreatic cancer is just awful, even by cancer standards. It's hard to detect early and by the time it's caught it's almost always too late. =(
