"... and that brands have a single image, thereby prohibiting sub-brands such as Marlboro Red or Marlboro Gold."

I'm fully supportive of Uruguay here, but also a bit curious about this aspect of their laws. I've never smoked or lived with someone who did, so I could very well be missing something, but much as smokers have preferences for their cigarettes I can't see too many people quitting entirely because they can't get their favorite.

Trust me, they would rather have their favorite imported and breaking laws than 'smoke a different one' or find some other thing to have as a habit (like chewing tobacco or vaping) to get their fix. Watching my mom work in a smoke shop it was just, wow at some of these people. Some threw such childish pissfits if she grabbed the wrong pack of cigs because they just vaguely pointed instead of saying Malboro 100s black menthol. They flat expected her to mind read what they wanted over the 20 brands that were on the wall behind her.

As sad as it is This yahoo question has the best list of how many cig brands and even then that's an incomplete list.

All alone it probably would not make a huge difference in getting people to quit. But the different sub-brands and especially the "lighter" versions still play a huge role in the brand image and marketing. It really only shows that they have a really comprehensive concept and that their goal is not only getting people to stop smoking but taking away all the brands strategies of making smoking desirable in the first place.
