It's interesting how there are many cases of Jewish ACLU lawyers who fight for neo-Nazi's first amendment right to rally and say anti-Semitic things. Neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups are still being watched by the government as possible domestic terrorism threats, though.
The whole problem with banning hate groups and hate speech, is the possibility people of color would not be able to freely talk about racism. White people already think #blacklivesmatter and La Raza are racist hate groups.
Germany lost ww2 badly, but the Nazis ultimately won, because their ideology has thrived globally since then. There are still major hate crimes against Jews in countries that ban Nazi groups and symbols, including Germany.
America's difficult to compare to other countries, because of the slippery-slope paranoia of the constitution. The mentality around free speech is "I don't agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” It's not possible to actually defend hate groups based on their positions. It's the same with religion. There are lots of hateful parts in religions, but people have a right to practice their religion to the point where their beliefs don't negatively interfere with others.
