I'm not Native American/Amerindian so please keep that in mind and take my comment with a grain of salt. I don't mean to be offensive or overstep and I do understand that there are specific nuances that I haven't experienced, and I really, truly don't mean to "butt in" and...I don't know, maybe that means I shouldn't say anything, but ack I'm so torn I just feel that this is important

The thing is she's not Native American. Her claiming that she is is purely based off "family folklore" and N.A stereotypes. This is something N.A have been fighting f o r e v e r. The "I'm 246th of a hundredth Cherokee!" shit has to stop. Not to mention the fact that she's claimed it, but hasn't done shit to help out actual Native Americans. So not only is she hurting Native Americans in the process, but she's claiming an identity and then not helping out an extremely marginalized group of people who's identity she's co opting as her own.
You might be right, but what I've read is that her mother is Cherokee and Delaware and that she was actively kept from learning about her heritage. I don't think that's the same as being 1/82947 th.
I don't know, this leaves a very sour taste in my mouth...
It may to you but for a lot of actual Native American's it does* (editing b/c I forgot a bit) and just instigates anger within them. Identity is a huge thing to them, as a half-Mayan (indigenous people of Guatemala) I understand that anger and that need to hold onto your culture amongst a fleet of outsiders who try to co-opt something your people have sacrificed themselves, to make sure to it lives on

my co-worker keeps harping on how her great great grandparents were possibly native American. She can't name the tribe, she said their papers put them down as mulatto but she said it wasn't just regulated to blacks. She showed me their pictures asking if I see the NA in them and I was like "Phentoypes are known to lie sometimes, so I can't tell".
She claims she's going to get a DNA test, cause I keep telling her to do it. But if her great great grandparents were half Black...crap, I don't win either way....
Of course, Trump isn't the only Republican currently narrowing in on her dubious lineage. On Monday, former Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts said Warren should take a DNA test to prove whether or not her claim of Cherokee heritage is legitimate.
It should be noted that the question of her ancestry began as a smear campaign from Scott Brown in 2012. And that a DNA test wouldn't be able to tell anyone anything about her possible NA ancestry.
Yeah, I don't disagree with the gist of this article--she should indeed probably just own and acknowledge the complicated aspects rather than making excuses, and I also agree she could do more for awareness. But it implies it is something she's talked up constantly "she has played the card for decades" and as far as I know (as a local) that is simply not true.
Yeah, I'd like to know exactly what the author means by this. Afaik, she has not "played the card" at all, as I understand that expression. What I mean is, I have never seen any actual evidence, just unsourced rumors and accusations.
From what I understand, she did most likely benefit, by marking herself as mixed race on college admissions. Like the article says, it may have been an honest and understandable mistake for the era, and she should own that
