I wonder what the chances are for a coup at the Republican convention? I think as the days go by and Trump continues to sink it becomes more likely.

i've been wondering the same thing, tbh! i'm not sure what would be better for the dems/independents who have no interest in supporting trump-- if there does end up being a successful coup and trump runs third party out of spite, or if the RNC just gives up on any chance of a republican presidency for this upcoming term and just rolls with it?

tbh, i wasn't expecting trump's poll numbers to tank so badly after all the bullshit he's gotten away with thus far, so i'm not sure if it'll make much difference for us either way if that trend continues.

then again, my mother is convinced that trump actually has no interest in being president and didn't expect to get this far and is now trying to sabotage himself to have an excuse to get out, so maybe he's actually praying for a coup, lmao. at this point i feel like anything could happen.

I have read that at one point, at least, the Republicans were actually set to give up on the presidency this election cycle and planned to maintain and focus on gaining more seats in Congress to make up for it to their base. I haven't heard about that in a while, but I could see it still being in play (although, I hope they lose seats instead of maintaining - or worse, gaining).

I think your mom is right, though. I think Trump just wanted to expand his brand and be able to say he had ~run for president~ for bragging rights and prestige and get further than he had in the past. I'm not entirely certain he meant to get this far, either, but I do worry he is enough of an egomaniac that he actually wants to continue and see just how far he goes.

I do wonder what is going to happen, though. Are the Republicans just going to accept it or di they have something up their sleeve? I hope they are able to stop him, but I also hope they lose big this year regardless.

Yeah, he should probably go hide in a cave and think about his life choices, tbh. But I also wonder if it would be better for him to run because of all that has gone down as of late and it would be at least a little easier to beat him. But then again, he might have more name recognition throughout the state than the other candidates (at least that's one of the reasons the GOP are trotting out for why they want him to run again, anyway) and maybe that could still be beneficial (despite the burned bridges in Florida, but maybe those burned people would still vote for him over a Democrat).

I worry that the buyer's remorse re: Trump might make people think, "Hey Rubio was pretty great!" and they'll vote for him because of that

That is a good point. He has a bizarre way of landing on his feet when it comes to controversies, too. It may not be the case this time around, but it's a scary gamble.

Aw man, I believed him when he said he was going to retire from politics. :( Rubio, no. You'll be so much happier as a private citizen! No more being outclassed by angry men wearing ginger ferret wigs!
