'Blue lives matter' bill set for Louisiana governor's signature.

With the nationwide friction between the Black Lives Matter movement and supporters of law enforcement as a backdrop, Louisiana is set to approve a bill that would expand the state's hate-crimes statute to add the targeting of police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel.

The bill, also known as the "Blue Lives Matter" bill, has passed both ( Read more... )

I realize not all cops are bad cops, but as I just posted on another thread, what about the black guy on death row for decades for killing a cop who (with his buddies) was beating the guy and telling him they were taking him to their KKK meeting to lynch him? Police officers who are KKK members do not deserve that extra legal Teflon plating. It's hard enough to get a bad cop tried much less convicted as it is.

Right? And as far as I'm concerned, if any 'good' cop is staying silent and not speaking up to stop or indict a bad one, s/he's bad, too.

And the story you mentioned is utterly horrific.

I'm a public employee as well-- a teacher. I guarantee you if my employers found out I was a member of the KKK (as if they'd take me) I'd be fired on the spot. I think the same should apply to police and fire. Or really anyone on the public payroll.

I mean, I definitely agree that police/firefighters/medical personnel should feel safe doing their jobs.

But calling themselves a minority group and calling the law "Blue Lives Matter"?
Come on now.

This isn't even going to make them feel safer because it has nothing to do with the inherent dangers of these jobs. Police and firefighters/first responders face completely different safety issues. They tried to lump them all together to make it seem like it's not about these police officers' hurt feelings. (I know you're not saying any of this, it's just the more I think about it the more illogical it gets.)

No, I totally get how you feel. They're definitely trying to lump them all together even though there's a difference in the dangers they face. This is just validating the Fox News-perpetuated rhetoric that "But police have to shoot people because it's dangerous~" (even though the actual number of police officers being shot has decreased) to pass off the blame.

Why can't they use all of this effort and time into retraining police officers to de-escalate situations (rather than going for their gun straight off the bat) instead of being whiny asshats about it >:/

I understand police work is dangerous and sometimes people are hurt in the line of duty, but appropriating BLM is gross. :/
