It's understandable for sane people to think about how they can escape the US in the wake of a Trump presidency. Since the primaries began, more and more Americans are considering a relocation, so much so that there have been notable spikes in Google searches about immigrating to Canada. Wait, wait, wait. Back up. The REAL question to ask ontd_p is whether they think Obama IS hotter than Justin Trudeau.

This is not a hill that I ever expected to die on, but I'm willing to do it for my country.

Lol I almost went with that question instead, but damn it's a hard choice. They're both very attractive and charismatic.

*snort* Nice to see this described from the perspective of a Canadian.

I've seen "I'm going to move to Germany where there's also free college if Trump wins" posts elsewhere. It's quite amazing how shocked people are when told that no, you won't be admitted to study medicine in Germany with a US highschool diploma, and no, classes are in fact in German, and you need to prove high language skills as well.

And then the shock when they're told that to move here legally as a non-student, Americans need visa and working permits, which they won't get unless they find an employer who's willing to claim that they have special job skills beyond any German or EU citizen they could find, and that "being American" doesn't count as a job skill.

I mean, I feel for Americans who don't want to live under Trump, but this attitude of "oh, I'll just go to [x] where my American-ness will mean that any immigration limitations don't apply" is somewhat grating.

This. It also makes me laugh when conservatives are like, "Sanders is a socialist and if he wins I'll be moving to Canada!" And I'm like, have fun with that, you're basically moving to a country that upholds all the things a democratic socialist wants for the US.

Yeah, I think a lot of Americans just think they hop on a plane and that's it. My husband became a US citizen a couple of years ago and all the paperwork was such a pain in the ass. And he actually had it easier than most immigrants because he qualified for special immigration status.

ughhh I want to live in Germany one day and this makes me so sad :( I understand why there are so many hoops to jump through to move to another country but, man, I wish it were easier. In the meantime, I'll keep studying German and saving money to vacation there one day :)

Being German I'm pretty free to move around. If I had to leave I would probably go to the UK or Ireland.
Funnily enough, one of my cousins emigrated to Canada with his wife a year ago, and another cousin has an American green card and decided against going.
