Still say we should just get rid of the damned draft entirely.

The draft is for the defense of the nation. I know a lot of people don´t see the possibility of the draft being used ever again but Vietnam was not that long ago when you think about it and given that the US does not have the best PR image in the world these days, it is not so far fetched.

In before someone comments that Vietnam was not a threat. There are bigger and much more stronger countries that would not mind to see the US come crashing down.

In regards to the women signing up for the draft. Yes they should.

Vietnam was bc France asked us to help them bc they didn't want to lose the region.

I'm not against what you're saying but at the same time considering the rise of drones / long-range missiles / super-hi tech fighter planes... yeah, we're not THAT defenseless.

No Vietnam was not that long ago, but the state and structure of war has so rapidly changed since then that it might as well be a different ball game. Anyway, the National Guard is for the defense of the nation, the draft is an outdated notion of loyalty to the state.

If the populace of a country has lost faith to the point that a draft is required for its defense, then maybe that's a country no longer worth defending.

How about we pay women equal pay for equal work first?

Why would we do that when we could just use them as more meat for the grinder.

The draft should be gotten rid of, but I don't mind this. It might even lend some (okay, a tiny bit, lbr) equality to women in the military environment by removing something that would be used against them. (That is, some dude saying, 'Yeah, but you don't have to sign up for the draft!' and so on.) It might even add more reluctance to ever using the draft again, because you know a lot of men would be like, 'Not the wiminz! They can't fight!'

I'm for the better pay and healthcare for soldiers, but do we really need more aircraft, soldiers, etc.? If the aircraft were replacing old ones and were safer for soldiers, okay, I can see that. Given how our military likes to use old equipment until it actually falls apart, though, I doubt that's the case. The defense budget is so bloated and out of control. =/

Until they fix the rape problem, this is just exposing women to sexual assault, but when they fix the large amount of rapes that occur and are incorrectly prosecuted or just no papered, then yes, sure it should be equal as long as the ridiculous notion of the draft exists.

Right? I would not feel safe, as a Muslim-American lesbian, serving in these armed forces, and it's not because of "the enemy".

I honestly don't understand why women would want to sign up for military service knowing how rampant the culture of misogyny and sexual assault is (and apparently there's a high incidence of sexual assault towards men in the military as well.)
