UnitedHealthcare, the biggest health insurer in the United States, said Tuesday that it plans to exit most of the Affordable Care Act state exchanges where it currently operates by 2017.

The health insurer had already indicated that it was dropping coverage of the plans, more commonly known as Obamacare, in Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan.

I worked for UHC during the run-up and aftermath of ACA, and their perspective/outlook on the law at an executive level was fucked from the start. They were always talking in meetings about how they could 'be the exchange' in a state rather than trying to understand how the plan was supposed to function and didn't understand that their plans -- which have a heavy focus on high deductibles, arcane prescription coverage and punitive 'wellness incentives' -- were WAY more attractive to businesses hoping to cut their per member per month cost than they would be to individuals making their own health care decisions. They're poorly positioned on the exchanges and don't offer strong customer service geared towards those members ( ... )

I feel for you. What they're doing to the NHS is terrible.

Cameron and the Tories should go die in a fire.

Jesus CHRIST. Healthcare is a disaster in this country. It's honestly probably my #1 issue right now which is why I'm so passionate about Bernie. We NEED a single payer system.

Same. I turn 26 next month but I'm an unemployed full-time student who can't afford to buy insurance on my own but isn't eligible for Medicaid. And on top of that i have health issues and I'll probably only be able to work part-time once i graduate so this problem isn't going to go away for me. :/

I would look into your states medcaid or healthcare assistance further. I know in my state people qualify for if they're 140% above the poverty line which is about 15-16k a year. And if you're in between that you can then get subsidies for healthcare from the healthcare exchange. If you're working part time and make less than 27k a year, I think you qualify.

I'm really not an expert, but doesn't it depend on whether a particular state has passed the Medicaid expansion?

Here's a link I found at Healthcare.gov which details the options available by state and according to income level and household size.

(Putting in Texas was an eye opener as to what not expanding Medicaid means. Fucking criminal.)

This is what happens when you allow lobbyists from the Healthcare industry to decide what goes into Obamacare. What a mess.

Small player in the exchange game.

They had a pretty small market share to begin with and were never quite on board. See how this unfolds in the next few months with the major two that are players in ACA. If one of them or both decide to bail then there might be a problem
