At St. Mary’s Park in South Bronx, René Pérez, aka Residente, introduced Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Before that, he delivered an impassioned speech about what Puerto Rico deserves.

“Tonight, I’m not here to talk about economic issues, because I’m not an economist,” he began. “I’m not here to talk about our right to free, ( Read more... )

This was a GREAT speech; I've seen, I think, almost all his opener's speeches and this one hit it outta the park! I think Jane will probably visit PR to campaign. I know they sent her to Hawaii and Alaska, so it seems she is visiting the places that typically get no love

I have a huge migraine today so I won't go into details about how utter fucked Puerto Rico is right now but I will say that the support for Bernie is growing here. I run a FB page for PRicans for Bernie and in the past weeks we have grown our likes, slow and steady but it's happening. College students are getting involved so that's a great sign. Many PRicans vote for who their party tells them to so obviously Hillary has strong ties with both dominating parties and people blindly vote that way. We are working to change that.

Also, Calle 13 is a controversial figure, he has spoken in support of Maduro and Castro in the past but he does it in a viewpoint of the oppression of the US on Latin American countries. He IS very smart and politically aware. This is my favorite song of his which speaks about Latin America's beauty, people and abuse throughout history but our resilience. It's really beautiful.

He is craaaazy talented honestly. Is he perfect? Not at all but he does love Puerto Rico and strongly identifies with our Latinx side because even though we are American citizens and are a bit Americanized we see ourselves as Latinx.

Here's a quick video that more or less explains what's going on in PR but it's so much more complex and complicated than that.

Here's a more in-depth report.

ETA: Our current tax for consumer goods is 11.5% which will be raised to 14% in June. We are drowning here and have little to no help.

I can't get this video to play. After you're feeling better, would you mind telling me a bit of what it's about? I've tracked down and watched a couple "Fault Lines-The Puerto Rico Gamble" videos but I can't find this one.

Full sympathy re: migraines. I hope you're feeling better soon.
