I think we are going to have to establish potty patrols in statehouses now, demanding that members show us their members before being allowed to enter. After all, what proof do any of us have that these politicians are conforming with their birth sex? For that matter, what proof do we have that they aren't actually reptilian invaders in disguise?

But to be serious, all these state laws being passed demanding that people release proof of their (assigned) sex to randoms seem to me to be in violation of existing federal law mandating medical privacy. I think any establishment that wants to avoid litigation should declare all of their restroom facilities to be unisex. Yank out all the urinals and make the stall doors extend from ceiling to floor. Get rid of common shower and changing areas in locker rooms, and install single occupancy stalls. I'm pretty sure these would be welcome changes anyway.

I was actually thinking that a really good compromise on locker rooms would be to have individual changing stalls. In bathrooms you don't really see people's genitals, but in locker rooms there's the potential that you could, and I know penises can be upsetting for a lot of cis women (plus some trans women who don't have breasts and such may feel uncomfortable changing in front of cis women, and trans men who have breasts may feel uncomfortable changing in front of cis men). So put in private changing stalls for ANYONE to use. As a cis woman, I'd be THRILLED to have a place to change in private in a locker room anyway, so I think it would be a step up.

Let's be real: it's not about privacy. It's about finding ways to beat down a group that is different from the status quo.

perfectly said.

“I think any child or young adult has a right to have their privacy protected when they’re in various stages of undress,” Mary Pilcher-Cook, a Republican senator, told the Kansas City Star.

Unless that child or young adult is transgender. They apparently have no right to have their privacy protected in Mary Pilcher-Cook's world. When I think of the danger those children will be forced to face if they try to comply with the law when they externally present as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth I feel sick.

For those who can vote in KS District 10, volunteer, etc, Pilcher-Cook's Democratic opponent for November 2016 is Vicki Hiatt. http://www.hiattforkansas.com/

This article talks about how building codes and potty parity laws interfere with a move toward gender neutral bathrooms: http://reason.com/archives/2014/04/11/gender-neutral-bathrooms-building-codes/
