That ruling is and will always be a MESS. I cannot believe it was actually taken away because "we don't need it anymore." What bullshit. Makes me sad for our country.

The main argument against the voting rights act was that it placed a greater burden on the former confederate states than other states, which was true. Personally, I agree with the ruling. Discrimination against POC doesn't occur only in the Deep South and the right to vote should be protected in every state. The big mess is that congress should have immediately acted to pass legislation for a voting rights act that would have applied to all states and territories immediately following the ruling and didn't. The lack of action on this issue is one of the many reasons we need to oust those in congress with regressive platforms.

I love how the overall response from the clerk was "all of those people had the option to vote early." Like fuck off. Some of us might want to hit the polls and get our fucking sticker.

I saw pictures of the lines and the graphic of how many polling stations were in 2012 compared to now and it's so awful. I cannot imagine how that was able to happen.

I'm always hmm.... at the striking down the voting rights act, because my actual opinion was that main provision need to cover every single state, not just southern ones. The problem is that it will be nigh impossible to get a congress to enact that statute.
