I want to know that the state of Michigan will have to pay back the money, honestly. I feel like the state doing something so fucking appalling in the name of "fiscal conservatism" and then getting bailed out by the federal government is just going to plant a seed in the brain of all the shitty conservative state/city governments around the country.
Michigan voters made their bed by voting for Snyder and his tax policies. They should have to pay more in (not regressive) taxes to foot the bill for this.
(personally, I was out on the streets campaigning for his opponents, don't blame all of us!)
If the state had to pay it back, they would likely use it as an excuse to impose even more austerity on us. My guess is that there would be more cuts to education, infrastructure, etc as opposed to taxes unless we can dump all the republicans. And, they have gerrymandered the hell out of the districts here, so cleaning up the house and senate is going to difficult, even if the current crew will be gone eventually since we have term limits here.
I'm not opposed to the idea of paying the aid back, but it needs to be done in a way that won't hurt the folks who are already been hurt the most by this administration. And, if the current government has any say in how the funds are paid back that isn't going to happen.
I know, it's a shitty solution. It just really grinds my gears that he knowingly ruined the lives of a whole generation of Flint residents for the sake of low tax rates and now we have to clean up his mess.
I nearly fell for his 'tough nerd' schtick. My parents had to point out various things in his campaign that they knew I wouldn't agree with back in 2010 and I voted for the opponent at the last minute. Sadly it didn't help.
By 2014 he'd shown his ass and it was a no brainer to vote for his opponent. Sadly, again it didn't matter much :/
