Come thru, Obama! I hate that this ridiculous policy is still in place in so many schools despite the mountains of evidence that prove that it doesn't work. I don't remember much of my sex-ed but it was definitely very sex-shaming, especially towards girls, and of course I knew girls who were pregnant my senior year or had babies right after we graduated. Great job, Bible-belt public education!
Nope, it doesn't work. Comprehensive sex ed, meanwhile, doesn't make kids who weren't already interested in becoming sexually active suddenly want to become sexually active. In fact, when they're not feeling ashamed and scared, when they're comfortable with their sexuality, they're arguably more likely to say no to stuff they're not ready for.
It amazes me that abstinence only sex-ed is even allowed. I guess I got really lucky. The sex ed I got was pretty good, and pretty realistic ("if you are going to have sex, you can protect yourself by....").
It's not just about those who choose to be sexually active. /Everyone/ should know what the fuck condoms and IUDs and pills and patches and vasectomies are. Everyone should know that the most fertile time of a female body is during ovulation, that your cervical mucus gets gelatinous around that time, and that it's an imprecise method of birth control. And you should know these things BEFORE you become sexually active. People shouldn't be kept from this knowledge just because they're not sexually active.
Woot! I want to see what other sorely needed shit he gets done in his final year as president when he no longer gives a fuck about re-election. Keep the good stuff coming!
The main reason, if I'm not mistaken, is that of the idea of convincing kids to just not have sex is simply an unrealistic goal.
Here's an article that goes into more detail about what's wrong with this approach is ineffective:
The Failures Of Abstinence-Only Education Illustrated In 2 ChartsAs I understand it, most abstinence-only programs rely on trying to scare kids into avoiding sex by telling them that contraceptives are ineffective, and the only way to avoid unwanted pregnancies and stds is to abstain. The kids who receive this kind of indoctrination are likely to not bother with contraceptives when they finally do have sex, because they've been taught that they don't do any good. (Which is, of course, a lie, but kids who have been sold this particular bill of good don't know that
