I hate the term pro-life so much. I once brought up a fatal attack on a nine year old Tajik Muslim girl by Russian skinheads and an anti-choice activist asked why she should care. I don't know why. Ask the Manic Street Preachers.
Thing is, these people aren't pro-life, they're pro-birth. They don't really care about people, and especially women, once they're born. If they did they'd be promoting birth control, which is still the best method to lower the number of abortions, and see to providing care for new mothers and so on.
They don't care about life, not even the life of the fetus. If they did they wouldn't be cutting pre-natal healthcare and nutrition programs. It's about purity culture and the belief that pregnancy is a form of punishment for enjoying sex outside of the bounds of their rigid morality. It's about selfishness, greed, and an unwillingness to contribute to maintaining the social fabric. All that "personal responsibility" prattle boils down to a belief that sex should be exclusively reserved for those who "can afford to have a baby." In other words, people who are able to raise a family without reliance on any form of government assistance (which will eventually mean paying for private schools, libraries, parks, etc. if the Republicans continue their current trajectory).
yep. It has even found its way onto my dad's FB page. So embarrassing, I can't even. I had to link him an article that laid out all the bad editing and then I asked him what he thinks about people who would lie to manipulate people into believing such heinous things about people who are trying to do good in the world. you know, Basic critical thinking. I don't see too much wrong with a personal distaste for abortions, but the alternatives are readily offered at PP for poor and working women, and yet my dad and people like him seem to be opposed to those things too. He won't get it though. he is so staunchly into faux news, he just eats it all up. so depressing. D:
Ugh. I just picked my dad up from the airport and he mentioned this video. I told him that it was debunked and not portrayed in an accurate way. My dad who was a renowned fucking surgeon was like, 'I don't know...that woman was saying some terrible things.'
Like, really Dad? I know you haven't practiced medicine in a couple of decades, but seriously?
yup. someone commented-- "I still think its heartbreaking" -- like, way to show your privilege lady. Must be nice to never need affordable family planning related healthcare. I really hate people sometimes. :(
The fourth paragraph contains the statement "Full debunkery here, here, here and here," but the links are not present. Here are the links from the original article:
