Wow, it appears no one cared about this young man - neither the system, nor the murderer, and nor the family. I hope the last choke on their blood money.

WTF? I wonder if the family would have felt the same way if the killer had been a younger adult. I admit there's little satisfaction sending a 70 yr old to a life sentence.

And this is one of the things so fucking wrong with this country, that guns are so freely available to people so terrified of the world that someone mistakenly pulling into their driveway is grounds for killing them.

I know....it really makes me wonder if there's more to this story than has been made public.

Either way, it's weird.

Seems to me that they didn't want him to be treated like Trayvon Martin, and worried that actually pursuing the case would lead to a defense that argued Diaz was a thug who had threatened Sailor in some way.
(Obviously racial differences but latino men are also often stereotyped as dangerous, so I can see why one would think that he would have his character attacked in defense of a white man who claimed he was afraid for his life.)

Just makes me sad that they felt they had to choose between him being vilified or seeking justice.

IA with this. This was what I got out of it too. They didn't want him demonized for his own murder.

I'm about to be a lawyer and whoever's idea to plea a MURDER charge down to a misdemeanor should be disbarred. I understand the family not wanting to go through a trial but this innocent man was shot for NO REASON except being lost. If I got shot every time I got lost... Whoever his defense attorney is must be racking up the clients getting a plea deal like that.

Sounds neat, what, uh, branch of law are you going into?

Edit: OK maybe not disbarred but the bar should be notified. It just seems unconscionable to me.

I want to be a prosecutor for domestic violence and sex crimes.

A lot of need for that, unfortunately.
