Good. This will deepen the gap between regular people and those living in the ivory tower of the church even more. Maybe at some point the conversation will change from "are homosexuals welcome in the church" to "wth do we even need this backward institution anymore"...

The hierarchy is generally not representative of the laity

Yeah, and in my experience, a lot of Catholics are far more concerned with what goes on in their local parish than they are with the stuff that comes from the top leadership and I think there are local priests who are far more progressive than the leadership. Heck, my parents back in the 1970s were told by their priest that he felt that whatever they decided about birth control was none of the Church's business.
