British Police Dog euthanized because of Breed Ban.

Jul 22, 2014 06:48

A POLICE sniffer dog with “great potential” has been put to sleep at a Taunton RSPCA centre after being found to be a banned breed.

Avon and Somerset Police took on Tyson, a pitbull-cross, after he had appeared on Channel 5 show Dog Rescuers.

Unable to rehome. )

But policies based on physical traits have always worked out so well!

I wish instead of killing the dog the RSPCA had had the clout and the gumption to turn animal abuse legislation against the legislators, take this shit to court and argue the cruelty of condemning a demonstrably healthy, well-socialized, well-trained, helpful animal to death because it's got characteristics of a breed that looks scary. Take the numbers, point out to a judge that breed-specific legislation is not only useless but, as is clearly seen in cases like this, actually detrimental to society, and work to get these bullshit laws off the books.

Aaaand I didn't read more than the headline before I thought "I bet it was a pitbull". Ridiculous.

I know, right? I automatically ASSUMED it was a pitbull without even really thinking about it. Like my brain translated the words "banned breed" to "pitbull" without any conscious thought on my part.

This whole thing is absolutely revolting.

It makes sense, unfortunately. Because they are the most banned type of dog, so when we talk about a Breed Ban or BSL it is always about them.

It really is revolting, and a perfect example of how stupid these laws are. I cannot even begin to imagine what I would do if someone tried to come take my dogs away. There'd be blood, almost certainly.

Utterly ridiculous! Even putting aside how wrong it is to put down a healthy dog, it also sounds like a real waste of tax payers money if they spend months on training him to be a sniffing dog.

It really is. Like I said, they are expensive to train and you really need a very special dog if you want one that is good at the job. It sounds like he was exceptional and would have gone on to great things, helped many people and saved lives as a K-9 officer.

I mean, you have expert trainers already vouching for his temperament and putting him through extensive obedience training far beyond a normal dog. A K-9 handler is far beyond an average owner, as well. It was an enormous waste, and a disservice to an amazing dog that deserved better.

No bad dogs, only bad owners.

This was obviously a highly trained animal, obedient and useful. This story is a testimony to human stupidity. The British, of all nations, should know better.

The laws on prohibited type dogs are there to protect people from types of dogs bred for fighting.

Dogs like, the English Mastiff? Or the English Bulldog?? The fucking icon of British pugnacity, tenacity and courage??? What has happened to the UK where these bloodless, thin lipped, tight-assed cunts get to run the country?

LOL, um, no. /gotta love the jingoism

"What has happened to the UK where these bloodless, thin lipped, tight-assed cunts get to run the country?"

I'd encourage people to ignore you from now on, but I just thought it important to point out the horribly sexist tone.

Just to establish a history...

1. They don't run the country.
2. They aren't thin lipped, tight-assed or cunts.
3. In fact, I don't doubt they would appreciate any good dog without worrying whether or not some thin-lipped tight-assed cunts think they are "scary."
