I don't even get the point of this. To intimidate/scare, or a mistake? According to news a rebel leader had posted on vkontake that they had shot down an Ukrainian cargo plane, around the same time this occurred, but deleted it afterwards.

my dad mentioned he heard that on the news on the radio on his way home! honestly i wouldn't be at all surprised if that were true.

I think the consensus so far is mistake. The US is pretty sure this was either the pro-Russian forces or Russia (probably indirectly Russia either way). Pro-Russian forces have been shooting down Ukrainian cargo planes, which are similarly sized, and likely mistook this one for another Ukrainian plane. Which is terrible anyway, but the number of passengers on this plane is much higher than cargo planes usually have and... yeah. What a deadly, costly error. :(

I'm still in shock over it. It's been four months since MH370, another 777 series plane, disappeared. This is so different because my intuition was true. I've been scared of Malaysia Airlines flying over Ukrainian airspace, especially over Donetsk, since the Ukrainian unrest between the Kiev government and pro-Russians have been fighting for months ( ... )

judging by all the finger pointing, the plane just spontaneously exploded or something because no one will fucking admit they pulled the trigger.

and i'm also side-eyeing whoever the hell at MAS decided to continue flying this flight over the Ukraine despite warnings that they should steer the hell clear of that area.

just appalled and fucking pissed off all 'round that this happened.

Yeah, I can't help wondering why any airline would want to fly through Ukrainian airspace right now.
