Americans Are Too Stupid For GMO Labeling, Congressional Panel Says

Jul 15, 2014 18:43

WASHINGTON -- It's pretty rare that members of Congress and all the witnesses they've called will declare out loud that Americans are just too ignorant to be given a piece of information, but that was a key conclusion of a session of the House Agriculture Committee this week ( Read more... )

"Even using long scientific-sounding words make it sound like it's been grown in a test tube, and people get scared of it," Just added.

Godddd this is so true, and which is why at the end of every healthy food kid tour I do at my grocery store I tell the kids that we're going to learn all about dihydrogen monoxide and let them guess at it until we get to the water aisle and explain what H2O means and stress on learning about the scientific words on the back before you decide to or not to get it.

I feel like education about GMO is way more important than trying to label GMOs.

THIS! There are many problems and issues with GMOs, but the idea that they may give me cancer or make me grow fish gills is way, way, way down at the bottom of that list.

But to educate on most of those issues requires a discussion on ecology, and economics, neither of which seems to be understood by enough Americans. If anything I would hope that leads to a push for a broader science education/literacy. There seems to be a disconnect between what science can do (understanding general health/wellness news articles or understanding what a new 'breakthrough' might mean) and what science is. And it seems to get worse the more conservative your state, and the longer it has been since high school.

This was why I was going to get a PhD in bioethics. Until I realized that I would be publishing articles in journals no one reads and not making money. And then I figured if I was concerned about money, maybe I wasn't cut out to be a bioethicist. Still, it's my sideline. And, yes, the public is ill-informed.

I just want a GMO labeling law so I know A) what exactly is in my food (good, bad or otherwise) and B) to make it easier to identify foods with ingredients that are by companies I don't like or want to support *cough*monsanto*cough*
