13 Reactions to the Hobby Lobby Case That Are Completely Misinformed

Jul 07, 2014 08:35

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, holding that the religious beliefs of owners of closely held companies can dictate what kinds of federal benefits employees might be entitled to. Hobby Lobby specifically dealt with the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and while the majority opinion, ( Read more... )

To add to number 8, there are tons of disorders and diseases that rely on birth control to help relieve the symptoms. Helps with pain and cancer risks with endometriosis. Helps delay painful cyst growth with polycystic ovary syndrome. In both cases it keeps the person from having a period and the painful, sometimes too heavy flow of the period. Helps with acne. Can regulate a period for people who don't have regular reliable periods. These are just a few. I can tell you my life without the depo shot has landed in me in the ER a few times for anemia, pain so bad I couldn't walk. I have had stage 4 endometriosis diagnosed now for 3 years. The last three years has not been a cake walk, I had to try several birth controls, got told my pain wasn't real. It took 1 really good woman doctor to see what the hell was going on. I have no life right now, because now my deposhot has stopped working and I spend my days mostly heavily medicated. I am going to have surgery soon to get an ovariectomy because my left ovary is so damaged from ( ... )

Same. Intellectually, I realize the value of freedom of religion, but it's been a very long time since I've seen that used as anything other than conservative Christians inflicting their religious views on others. Fuck freedom of religion.

I'm still furious about this decision. Sometimes I can't even talk about it, I get so angry. The fact that SCOTUS would interpret the RFRA like this just pushes me further over the edge.

I'm super-concerned that there's going to be repercussions for LGBTQ employees too. "God told me gays are gross so my company does not recognize your marital status." "God told me lesbians are gross so my company is not giving you time off to care for your sick partner." "God told me trans people are gross so forget any benefits at all because you're just plain fired."

Now I'm angry again.

I once had a friend who was in an extremely controlling marriage; any money they had was "their" money, but she had no control over it at all and could only spend what he would give her on things he approved. When she was working, he would confiscate her paychecks and add them to the "house" bank account, which was really just his second bank account that she was allowed to use to buy groceries and necessities for the kids. Anything she wanted for herself, she had to ask his permission for even if it was money she'd earned. If a charge he didn't recognize showed up on the debit card, she had to justify it to him, and often got in trouble for buying so much as a book for herself.

Let me reiterate: he would take her money away from her, then tell her how to spend it.That's basically what's happening here. Women are paying their insurance premiums, and then being told "you know that money you gave us to hold for you in the event of needing to pay for medical needs? I know it's your money and you earned it and technically we're just ( ... )
