14 Republicans destroy GOP argument against Marriage Equality

Jun 20, 2014 05:30

A group of Republicans took a position on Michigan's same-sex marriage ban this week, saying gay marriage promotes conservative values of stability, mutual support and mutual obligation, despite the party's stance against it.

Common sense becoming more common? )

Re OP's comment: it is little interactions like that which are why the tide is changing. People need concrete things to hang their thoughts on, and if your coworker wasn't already in support of marriage equality or making sure same sex parents can second parent adopt she probably is or is closer now.

I remember one older guy who had not seen a reason for marriage instead of civil union, a few years back, until a conversation where he learned that my female friends who had married in MA couldn't file joint fed returns, and when I expanded about the case that would eventually get to the Supreme Court, with 300k inheritance tax because of the marriage not being recognized by the Feds he paused for a sec, declared that bloody obviously a violation of equal protection, and going forward considered marriage equality to be similarly bloody obvious.

Istr that the New York marriage bill passed, in part, because some sharp people went to the conservatives in the legislature and said, this is about personal choice and personal responsibility. We want you to vote your principles.

Even if it indicates these people are currently out of office, so have nothing to lose, this is still admirable as a step forward.

And as the conservative platform is traditionally pro-family, it's good to see them recognize GLBT families as a positive and contributing to stability.
