This is not surprising and isn't limited to anti-vaxxers.

My sister's a hardcore antivaxxer, because "jenny says!" and no amount of reason from anyone will change her mind.

So...she lives in an area with a current measles outbreak, and common to see whooping cough and mumps amongst the unvaxxed/boosted.

She's made her choice. She can live with the consequences and we just hope her kid doesn't infect anyone else. Not that she'd care. My kid? Fully properly on schedule vaccinated and proud of it, dammit.

Hell, I'm a reasonably healthy adult, vaccinated and I got whooping cough this last winter. I had it for three damn months, and I was quarantined to my house. Do not want anyone to have to go through that.

my sister's been lucky so far, mostly because grandma totes the boy to the ER or doctor when he gets sick so sister thinks "he's never sick!", and she cares not a fig that they could spread anything to people, including immunocompromised folks because as she told me "You had it coming anyway,".

I was once severely immunocompromised. She doesn't give a fuck for anyone. So if this is the path they choose, and kid is now creeping into his teens we'll see how much fun mumps is then, I guess.

There is no reasoning with her.

wonder if she'll sing that tune if her kid infects someone immunocompromised who then dies and their family sues her ass.

honestly, that's what i'm waiting for--the family of a person killed because they were infected by an anti-vaxxer's kid to sue the parents' asses off. because i think that's what it's going to take to force these idiots to do what they're supposed to.

Out of all of this delusional bullshit, the thing that really chaps my hide is that these anti-vaxxers are basically saying that they'd rather have a dead child and very much possibly kill other peoples' children than a living one with an increased chance of autism or with autism. Fuck them with a pineapple chainsaw.

I honestly don't think this fact penetrates their brains. They're so convinced by herd immunity and the relative health of society that their kids are okay that honestly, I think some big scares and kids dying/outbreaks are going to be what makes people stop this anti-vax nonsense.

It kills me to know that people are risking an innocent child's life because of this bullshit. I honestly think it should be illegal.

ITA that it should be illegal and constituted as child abuse.

The fucked up thing is that it's not going to be their kid getting some other kid sick that will wake people up. It'll take their kids dying or being left with life-long disabilities. Which... I just can't put into words how sick that makes me feel.
