[Note to mods: This is my third attempt to post this article (the previous attempts were approximately 2/19/2014, and this past Monday, 2/24/2014). Neither of my posts showed up, and I haven't received any notification about why either one was rejected, so I'm not sure what's going on. It looks like the second time I forgot to include the link to ( Read more... )

Considering the states involved here, I'm just waiting for someone to put two and two together and go talk to the various sovereign First Nations in those states and say "how do you feel about building a Planned Parenthood here and telling the state to fuck off with its restrictions?"

They are sovereign nations and only need to abide by federal law. They can tell the surrounding state to take a flying fuck and not enforce state regulations. The Dakotas (north & south) and Oklahoma are the ones where that could easily make the biggest difference. and those areas are often extremely underserved medically already.

Obviously that would still have to go through tribal council and some would reject it and go with enforcing state law, but some could go well decided to remind the states they're in that they ARE sovereign nations and can tell them to keep their bullshit to themselves.

Can you imagine the screaming dramaspolsion over that though?

I love this idea! It wouldn't work in most of the states in this article, because they have few or no sovereign First Nations located within their borders. (AL, IA, and MS have one tiny reservation apiece; IN, KY, MO, SC, and WV have none.) But the Dakotas and Oklahoma would be excellent candidates, and there are lots of other states that would be possibilities as well.

The reaction would be a dramasplosion all right. And probably an entertaining one at that.

Wasn't this already a thing? I remember reading a while back about how the only place to get an abortion was on certain tribal lands? And they had to shut the clinics down because it was rattling the community?

A quick google doesn't give me very good results, but I admit my google fu isn't that great.

I haven't seen that offhand, but it may well have been something that appeared in local news, rather than national channels.

Well in lighter news, I'm trying to get started in becoming a clinic escort :) I e-mailed a few organizations last night about what I can do to get the ball rolling and I'm really excited to hear back.

Another year of republicans pushing regressive fundamentalist Christian domestic policies. I'm starting to go into overload and the worst is yet to come. I really, really hope the republicans lose by landslides in November if they are up for (re)election.
