School Apologizes For Racist Lunch Menu...

Feb 07, 2014 12:24

Somebody at a school in California decided to commemorate Black History Month with a lunch menu of fried chicken, cornbread, and watermelon... and now claims they weren't trying to perpetuate stereotypes. Text and trainwreck under the cut.

Whose idea was this?! )

you stay classy, california, food, education, fuckery, race / racism, stupid people, *trigger warning: racism, students

"KNTV-TV reports that school officials held an assembly Wednesday to discuss the issue..."

I would like to know more about this assembly. Not that it excuses this racist nonsense, but I was still surprised to hear that they even attempted to have a discussion about it with the kids.

I feel like this has happened before somewhere else, which makes it even more stupid. Or maybe it's just so absurd that it sounds like a joke and that's why it's familiar. Ugh.

I swear to god, it happens at least once every February. You can count on the "school has racist lunch to celebrate Black History Month" like clockwork.

I have co-workers with sons at the sibling school to this one and some of their daughters went here. I am 100% not surprised that this story came out of this school. Although I'm sure there are decent people and decent kids at both these school, in my experience, most are rich white kids with no concept of the world outside of their life of lululemon, tiffany & co, and treating their parents like shit.

I remember this happening years ago at the cafeteria at NBC (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/04/nbc-serves-fried-chicken_n_449821.html). I got into this huge debate on FB with this guy who maintained that fried chicken was a cultural food popular in the black community, and therefore appropriate and the whole thing wasn't racist. Then he linked me to the above article where the chef who made the menu (a black woman) actually agreed that the whole point was to make the menu specifically for black history month and she didn't understand why people thought it was racist. I didn't even know where to take our discussion at that point.
