You never know. Health is complicated and so much of it is out of your control.
My maternal grandpa smoked heavily from the age of 12 and still lived to 74 before lung cancer killed him. My paternal grandpa didn't smoke, didn't drink, exercised religiously, ate right, and dropped dead of a massive heart attack at 50.
Yeah, I'm hoping I got my health genes (which I'm sure is a real thing) from my dad's side of the family. Both my grandparents on that side are alive, they are both cancer survivors, my grandfather smoked all his life, has had cancer 3 times (last time was lung cancer from smoking), he has had emphysema and had an oxygen tank for awhile, but currently he is cancer free, off the oxygen, and doing pretty well. Other relatives have had similar health of being near death and making nearly miraculous recoveries.
My mom's side of the family is not so fortunate. Living until one's 80s is pretty much unheard of on her side.
I remember one of the former Marlboro men came to my high school and had assembly about the dangers of smoking. I wish I could remember what his name was, I don't know if it was this man or not. I don't think so, as this man had quit. I liked his presenting style, he talked to the students like they were, y'know, people and not morons. It's funny how teenagers and kids will listen to you when you don't treat them like two-year-olds.
I had a patient recently who started smoking at the ripe old age of 6. Their throat cancer has reoccurred and is probably going to need a laryngectomy. =/
